Abstract :  There is a general agreement among economists on the importance of education in developing the national economy. Since independence until today, Algeria has implemented a set of educational reforms in an attempt to raise the stock of educational capital in society and build a strong educational base. The latest of which was introduced in June 2022. It concerns the teaching of English as a foreign language instead of French in the primary school. With the acceleration of globalization, teaching English is increasingly viewed a real investment in human capital and a means of achieving competitive economic advantage. Moreover, mastering English has become a key criterion of good human capital and one of the must have 21st century skills needed by labor in order to produce economic value. The present empirical study aims at investigating the effectiveness of the current English language teaching curricula and practices to the requirements of employability and economic growth in the Algerian context. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from nine English as a foreign language (EFL) inspectors, 62 secondary school and university teachers, and 200 university students through online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
